Objectives: Healthy aging is a natural human right and emotion regulation is an important factor in improving mental health promotion in different developmental ages. The aim of this study was to compare emotion regulation in the older adults and adults.
Methods & Materials: A causal-comparative study and the statistical population includes all the older adults and adults in Tehran in 1398 and 235 people were selected by available methods and answered the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation, Emotion Regulation, Emotion Regulation of Others and Self and Mentalized Affectivity questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using multivariate analysis of variance, independent t-test and paired t-test with SPSS v.2 software.
Results: Difficulties in emotion regulation (F = 17.08, p-value <0.001), emotion regulation (p-value> 0.001, F = 16.07), and emotion regulation of self (t = -12.2, P-value = 0.35) were higher in the older adults than adults and less than 0.05 at the significance level. Factors of mentalized affectivity (t = -1.29, p-value = 0.198) and emotion regulation of others (F = 0.256, p-value = 0.614), the difference between the significance older adults and adults did not show.
Conclusion: The difficulties in emotion regulation, emotion regulation of self and cognitive reappraisal was higher in the older adults, although we did not see a significant difference between the older adults and adults in the variables of emotion regulation of others and mentalized affectivity. Mental health professionals can take effective measures at the general level of society based on the findings to promote emotional health and psychological well-being.
