Objectives: The aim of our study was to explore whether psychological well-being can be predicted by cognitive failures and negative affect with the mediating role of coping self-efficacy and social support in the elderly.
Methods & Materials: The method of this research was correlation and also to estimate of the relationship between the measurement and the latent variables, the structural equation model (SEM) was used. The statistical population was the elderly of Tehran city and composed of 450 subjects aged 60-80 who selected by convenience sampling method. The research tools included psychological well-being scale, Positive and Negative Affect Scale, Mini Mental State Examination, Coping Self-Efficacy Scale and Social Support Scale. Fitness of the proposed model was estimated through structural equation modeling (SEM) and using Lisrel software package. The mediating relationship in the proposed pattern were tested using the bootstrap procedure.
Results: The results showed that the proposed model has good fit. (247 men with mean= 66/34, Sd= 5/34 and 203 women with mean= 65/57, SD= 6/08). The four indirect pathways were statistically significant. Cognitive failures with β= 0/57, -0/06 & 0/27 effected on SS, CSE and PWB. Negative affect with β= -0/28, -0/34 & -0/11 effected on SS, CSE and PWB. Besides, coping self-efficacy effected on PWB with β=0/15 and social support effected on PWB with β= 0;57. (NFI= 0/95, TLI= 0/95, CFI= 0/96, RFI= 0/94, IFI= 0/96 and SRMR= 0/07).
Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of coping self-efficacy and social support in improvement of psychological well-being and consequently prevention of adverse outcomes due to cognitive failures in the elderly. So comprehensive strategies and action plans based on internal and external resources of old people are recommended in the healthy ageing field.
