Objectives: Due to the increase in the elderly population and the need to improve their health and quality of life, the demand for social services and health care has increased. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the degree of desire to work with the elderly and related factors among dental students.
Materials and Methods: The current descriptive-analytical study was conducted with the aim of investigating the willingness to work with the elderly among dental students in 1400. Our study population was all male and female students of dentistry at Islamic Azad University of Tehran without age limit, 287 dental students were selected by purposive sampling from the WEPS questionnaire which includes 20 items in 4 next, it was used for data collection. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, the desired data was collected by sending a questionnaire online and using SPSS version 23 software and with the help of independent t-test, multiple linear regression. and one-way analysis of variance was performed.
Results: The average age of the students participating in the research was (23.9 ± 3.807) and the average score of willingness to work with the elderly among dental students was (51.69 ± 13.004). The findings of this research showed that the willingness to work with the elderly among students of different dental semesters is not at a favorable level. Also, passing the gerontology course did not have an effect on increasing the desire to work with the elderly (p>0.05). Also, the experience of working with the elderly, visiting care centers and rehabilitation centers for the elderly, participating in conferences and workshops on the topic of aging, voluntary cooperation with charities significantly increases the desire to work with the elderly among students (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that the level of willingness to work with the elderly among dental students is not optimal. Also, students who had experience working with the elderly or had experience visiting care centers for the elderly or had participated in workshops or conferences related to the field of geriatrics were more inclined to work with the elderly, so designing course units and providing training to students during their studies and holding refresher courses and conferences on elderly topics can have a very effective role in increasing their willingness to work with the elderly among students.
