Objectives As the aged population increases, the number of people with Alzheimer’s/dementia has also increased, causing a global health concern. Caring for older adults with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia is a stressful job. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of coping strategies training on alexithymia and resilience of family caregivers of older adults with Alzheimer’s/dementia.
Methods & Materials This is a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design. The study population consists of all family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s/dementia from the Arak Alzheimer’s Association, Arak, Iran, in 2024. Of these, 30 were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were randomly assigned to two groups of 15. The tools were the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. The coping strategies training protocol was presented to the intervention group in ten 60-minute sessions, twice a week on even days for five weeks. To analyze the data, univariate and multivariate analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) were conducted in SPSS software, version 26, considering a significance level set at 0.05.
Results The mean age of participants was 34 years, with a mean caregiving duration of 4 years. The results of ANCOVA showed a significant difference in mean alexithymia score between the intervention and control groups (F=59.97, η2=0.70, P=0.001). There was also a significant difference in the mean resilience score between the two groups (F=31.72, η2=0.55, P=0.001).
Conclusion Training in coping strategies is effective in reducing alexithymia and improving resilience of family caregivers of older patients with Alzheimer’s/dementia. It is recommended that nursing educators and managers of elderly care centers provide training in coping strategies to clinical geriatric nurses in the form of a pamphlet or booklet, to be used as a guide to help and educate families and caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s/dementia.
