اهداف گرلین نوعی پپتید است که از سلول‌های غدد مترشحه معده ترشح می‌شود که می‌تواند تحت تأثیر رفتارهای غذایی، اشتها، انرژی مصرفی و تغییرات وزنی بدن قرار بگیرد. هدف از این پژوهش تأثیر ۸ هفته تمرین هوازی بر سطح گرلین پلاسما و بیان ژن گرلین لنفوسیت مردان سالمند بود.
مواد و روش ها در این مطالعه نیمه‌تجربی، ۳۰ آزمودنی به روش نمونه‌گیری دردسترس و هدفمند انتخاب شدند و به طور تصادفی به دو گروه مساوی ۱۵نفری، گروه آزمایش (تمرین هوازی) و کنترل، تقسیم شدند. گروه تمرین هوازی به مدت ۸ هفته، هر هفته ۴ جلسه به مدت ۵۰ تا ۶۰ دقیقه با شدت معادل ۶۰ تا ۸۵ درصد حداکثر ضربان قلب در فعالیت تمرین هوازی شرکت کردند. پس از ارزیابی اولیه (ترکیب بدن و بیان ژن گرلین) و ۸ هفته تمرین هوازی، ۴۸ ساعت پس از آخرین جلسه تمرین، ارزیابی دوباره تکرار شد. برای مقایسه میانگین‌های درون و بین‌گروهی از روش تحلیل واریانس با اندازه‌های تکراری استفاده شد و نتایج در سطح معنی‌داری ۰/۰۵>P آزمایش شدند.
یافته ها دامنه سنی آزمودنی‌ها در گروه آزمایش ۱۳/۶۸±۶۹/۳ و در گروه کنترل ۲۰/۳۱±۶۹/۴ بود. ۸ هفته برنامه تمرین هوازی منجر به کاهش معنی‌داری در مقادیر نمایه توده بدن از ۲۷/۵۷ به ۲۶/۹۰ کیلوگرم بر متر مربع (۰/۰۰۱=P)، کاهش درصد چربی بدن از ۲۴/۳۱ به ۲۱/۴۳ درصد (۰/۰۰۱=P) و افزایش بیان ژن گرلین لنفوسیت از ۱۶/۸۷ به ۲۴/۹۲ درصد شده است که در گروه آزمایش معنی‌دار بوده است. تغییر معنی‌داری در سطح گرلین پلاسما دیده نشد.
نتیجه گیری تمرین هوازی با افزایش بیان ژن گرلین لنفوسیت و کاهش معنی‌دار در نمایه توده بدن در مردان سالمند می‌تواند از بروز چاقی و اضافه‌وزن جلوگیری کند. همچنین می‌توان از نقش فعالیت ورزشی به عنوان درمانی غیردارویی در تنظیم و تعادل هورمون‌های پپتیدی مؤثر در شیوع چاقی حمایت کرد؛ از این رو، به سالمندان پیشنهاد می‌شود از تمرین‌های هوازی به عنوان روشی پیشگیرانه برای کاهش چاقی و بروز بیماری‌های مرتبط با آن استفاده کنند.
