Objectives: With the expansion of digital technologies, online social participation has emerged as one of the key opportunities for improving the quality of life among older adults. The present study was designed and conducted in 2024 with the aim of examining Iranian older adults’ perception of the benefits of this type of participation and the factors influencing it.
Methods & Materials: In this cross-sectional study, 420 older adults covered by Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences were selected using a multistage random sampling method from three centers (East, North, and Shemiranat). Data collection tools included a demographic information questionnaire and the Persian version of the Internet Social Participation Advantages Questionnaire (ISPAQ), whose validity and reliability were evaluated using face, content, construct, and criterion validity, as well as test-retest and internal consistency methods. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16 and statistical tests, including ANOVA and t-tests, with a significance level of P < 0.05.
Results: Most participants (40%) were in the age group of 65–69 years, and 47% of them were women. Results indicated that the mean perception of the benefits of online social participation among older adults was relatively high (3.996 out of 5). This perception was significantly associated with factors such as age, education, employment, economic status, number of children, marital status, internet usage, and digital skills (P < 0.05), but showed no significant relationship with gender (P = 0.582).
Conclusion: The findings of this study revealed a relatively good perception of online social participation among older adults, which is influenced by multiple individual and social factors. Designing targeted and multi-level policies and interventions, considering the growing importance of issues related to the elderly, can enhance participation, reduce isolation, and improve their quality of life.
