Objectives Due to the increasing aged population in Iran, health-related challenges of this age group have also increased. Hospitals should provide an environment that not only meets the needs and expectations of older adults but also ensures their safety. The present study aimed to evaluate the compliance of teaching hospitals in Bushehr, south of Iran, with the age-friendly criteria.
Methods & Materials This descriptive observational study was conducted in 2023. A census sampling was employed to select 8 teaching hospitals affiliated with Bushehr University of Medical Sciences. An age-friendly hospitals checklist was used to assess their compliance. The data were analyzed in SPSS software, version 26 using descriptive statistics.
Results The hospitals had 28-279 beds, with a mean of 117 beds. The mean compliance score was 37.28 ± 8.85 out of 100. Among the study criteria, the toilets and sanitary facilities exhibited the highest level of compliance, with a mean score of 11.75±1.40 out of 14, while the admission and payment domain demonstrated the lowest score (0.50±1.41) out of 8 (median=0.001).
Conclusion Teaching hospitals in Bushehr have poor compliance with age-friendly criteria. Planning to create appropriate conditions and make modifications in these hospitals and to train their personnel is essential to promote the safety and health of the elderly.
