Objectives: In light of the escalating elderly population in Iran, health-related challenges associated with this demographic have undergone a marked increase. The core mission of age-friendly hospitals is to establish an environment that not only fulfils the needs and expectations of older adults but also guarantees their safety. The present study sought to evaluate the compliance of hospitals affiliated with Bushehr University of Medical Sciences with the criteria of age-friendly hospitals.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive-observational study was conducted in 2023. A census sampling was employed in the examination of all general hospitals affiliated with Bushehr University of Medical Sciences, utilising the Age-Friendly Hospital Assessment Checklist. The data were analysed using SPSS version 26 through the implementation of descriptive statistics.
Results: The hospitals had between 28 and 279 beds, with an average of 117 beds. The mean compliance score of the hospitals with age-friendly criteria was 37.28 ± 8.85. Among the domains evaluated, the toilets and sanitary facilities criteria domain exhibited the highest level of compliance, with an average score of 11.75 ± 1.40. Conversely, the admission and payment domain demonstrated the lowest compliance, with a score of 0.50 ± 1.41 (median = 0.001).
Conclusion: The findings of the study indicated that the general hospitals affiliated with Bushehr University of Medical Sciences are not in a favourable condition in terms of alignment with age-friendly principles. In light of the demographic transition of the province towards an ageing population, it is imperative to devise a strategy for the requisite modifications to hospital infrastructure and to facilitate the training of healthcare providers, with a view to ensuring the safety and promoting the health of elderly patients.
