Objectives Aging is associated with significant changes in cognitive status, quality of life (QoL), and mental health. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a neurobic exercise program in improving cognitive functions and QoL, and reducing anxiety and depression in older adults.
Methods & Materials This is a randomized controlled clinical trial with a pre-test/post-test/three-month follow-up design. The study population included all older adults aged 60-74 years referred to the mental health clinic in Sirjan city during 2023-2024. After screening them using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Geriatric Anxiety Scale (GAS), and the QoL scale (QOL), 40 eligible people were selected and randomly assigned to two groups of 20, including intervention and control. The intervention group then received six 60-minute sessions of neurobic exercise based on the protocol proposed by Sanghuachang et al. (2023). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and univariate and multivariate analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) in SPSS software, version 24.
Results The mean age of the participants was 63.55±2.67 years. They were 51.4% female and 45.9% male; 40.5% had a bachelor’s degree, 43.2% had a high school diploma, and 13.5% had a postgraduate degree. The ANCOVA results showed that neurobic exercises had a significant effect on the cognitive status, QoL, anxiety, and depression of the elderly (F=78.23, P<0.001, η2=0.96).
Conclusion Considering the effect of neurobic exercises on the psychological problems of the elderly, it is recommended that the neurobic exercise program be used for treating mental health problems of older adults.
