Objective: Aging is associated with significant changes in the cognitive status, quality of life, and mental health of individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a neurobic exercise program on improving cognitive functions, quality of life, anxiety, and depression in the older adults.
Materials and Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial with a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up (three-month) design. The statistical population included all older adult aged 60 to 74 years old who were referred to the mental health unit of Sirjan city health centers in 2024-2023 that After screening them using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Geriatric Anxiety Scale (GAS), and Quality of Life Scale (QOL), 40 of these elderly people were selected and randomly assigned to two groups (20 people). After completing the pretest, the experimental group received 6 sessions of a 60-minute neurobic exercise program (Sanghuachang et al., 2023). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) and univariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) using SPSS 24 software.
Results: The mean age of the participants was 63.55 ± 2.67 years. The sample consisted of 51.4% females and 45.9% males. 40.5% had a bachelor's degree, 43.2% a diploma, and 13.5% a postgraduate degree. The results showed that training with neurobic exercises had a significant effect on the cognitive status, quality of life, anxiety, and depression in the elderly between the groups. The intervention effect coefficient was 0.96, with a 23.78 F and p < 0.001, respectively.
Conclusion: Considering the effect of neurobic exercises on the psychological problems of the elderly, as well as their acceptability, acceptance, and applicability by the elderly, it is suggested that the neurobic exercise program be used in the education of this age group in relation to mental health problems.
