Objectives: Aging is an inevitable and irreversible process. It is a part of the biological process that affects all living beings and is a stage that occurs after middle age. The diagnosis of personality disorders in the elderly is associated with various complexities and challenges, which stem from the unique characteristics of this age group, the psychological and physical changes related to aging, and the limitations of the available diagnostic tools.
Methods & Materials: The present study was a cross-sectional investigation aimed at the psychometric evaluation of an assessment instrument. In this study, the questionnaire Gerontological Personality Disorders Scale (GPS), consisting of 16 items, was examined and administered electronically via the Porsline platform and distributed through social media networks in which older adults were active. In addition, face-to-face data collection was conducted by visiting retirement centers in the cities of Ahvaz and Isfahan during the 2024. Convenience sampling was employed. To establish the validity of the questionnaire, three stages were undertaken: content validity, qualitative face validity, and construct validity.
Results: The mean age of the 315 older adults included in the study was 67.12 ± 5.65 years. Gender distribution indicated that 118 participants (37.46%) were female and 197 (62.54%) were male. Factor analysis conducted on the study sample identified five factors. Collectively, these factors accounted for 66.52% of the total variance, which is considered acceptable for data modeling. Key indices of construct validity included an RMSEA value of 0.035 and a MIN/DF ratio of 1.37. Additionally, the Comparative Fit Index (CFI) was 0.98, indicating that the proposed measurement model demonstrated a good fit to the data and that the suggested factor structure was confirmed. Furthermore, the results of the test–retest analysis indicated acceptable temporal stability of the assessed items. The Kuder–Richardson coefficient (KR-20) was 0.85, reflecting high internal consistency reliability.
Conclusions: This study is the first psychometric study of the personality disorder questionnaire for the elderly. The clear structure and high factor loadings support the structural validity of the questionnaire and confirm that it effectively measures various aspects of distress related to personality in the elderly population. Therefore, this questionnaire is a valid psychometric tool that can significantly contribute to the assessment and intervention planning for personality disorders in older adults.
