Objectives: Functional-power exercises have attracted considerable attention due to their simplicity and the possibility of being performed without specialized equipment. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the association of a 12-week low-cost functional-power training program with changes in physical performance, balance, inflammatory biomarkers (TNF-α and GDF-15), IGF-1, and quality of life in older adults residing in nursing homes.
Materials and Methods: In this study, 50 older adults residing in nursing homes (mean age: 72.4 ± 5.8 years) were assigned to intervention and control groups. The intervention group participated in a 12-week training program consisting of three sessions per week, each lasting approximately one hour and including bodyweight exercises, dynamic balance activities, and relatively brisk walking. Physical performance, balance, quality of life (assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire), and selected blood biomarkers were measured before and after the intervention using established methods.
Results: After adjustment for baseline values using ANCOVA, the intervention group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in physical performance, balance, quality of life, and favorable changes in TNF-α, IGF-1, and GDF-15 compared with the control group (p < 0.05). No significant changes were observed in the control group.
Conclusion: The findings of this study indicated that participation in a 12-week low-cost functional-power training program was associated with improvements in physical performance, balance, quality of life, and favorable changes in selected biological markers among older adults. Given the non-randomized nature of the study, randomized controlled trials are warranted to confirm these findings.
