Objectives: Retirement on the threshold of old age is a transformation and transition from one role to another that creates a profound change in an individual's life. In the meantime, the choice of lifestyle has a great impact on the quality of life and health of individuals. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of explaining the lifestyle dynamics of elderly retirees in Tehran in 1404.
Methods & Materials: To achieve the objectives of this study, a qualitative research design was employed using a Grounded Theory approach. The study aimed to elucidate the concept, structure, and dynamics of lifestyle within the lived contexts of older adults. Data collection commenced with purposive sampling and progressed to theoretical sampling until theoretical saturation was reached. Semi-structured interviews served as the primary data collection tool. The participants comprised 40 individuals, including elderly retirees living with their families and gerontology experts. A total of 47 in-depth individual interviews were conducted and subsequently analyzed according to the Strauss and Corbin (1998) method.
Results: From the data analysis, 11 main categories were extracted, with “adaptive self-regulatory agency” identified as the central phenomenon. The phenomenon's causal conditions included “coping with the erosion of individual capacity,” “managing economic security,” and “preserving the individual's psychological capital.” The participants' main strategies were “social engagement,” “learning new skills,” and “enhancing self-efficacy,” which led to “increased sense of agency” and “improved resilience.” Contextual and intervening conditions such as “daily activities,” “commitment to spirituality,” and “structure of social opportunities” influenced the formation and implementation of these strategies.
Conclusion: The results showed that the dynamics of the lifestyle of the elderly is a multidimensional process based on "adaptive self-regulatory agency" that is formed from the interaction of individual, family, social and structural factors. This agency is strengthened through social activism, skill training and family support and leads to the promotion of resilience and well-being of the elderly.
