Objectives:  Aging is associated with a decrease in skeletal muscle mass and an increase in key proteins of the Ubiquitin-Poteasome System (MuRF-1 and Atrogin-1), which will lead to muscle weakness and related damage. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of aerobic and resistance training on plasma levels of these proteins in inactive elderly men.
Methods & Materials:  In this quasi‑experimental study, 45 inactive older men aged 60–74 years were selected using convenience sampling and randomly assigned to three groups: aerobic training, resistance training, and control. The aerobic training group performed exercise for eight weeks, three sessions per week, at an intensity of 55–70% of Heart Rate Reserve (HRR). The resistance training group also trained for eight weeks, three sessions per week, at an intensity of 30–80% of one‑repetition maximum, following the principle of progressive overload. The control group did not participate in any structured exercise program. Blood samples were collected simultaneously from all three groups 48 hours before and after the training period. Plasma levels of MuRF1 and Atrogin‑1 proteins were measured using the Enzyme‑Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used for between‑group comparisons, and paired t‑tests were applied for within‑group comparisons. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25, with the level of statistical significance set at p < 0.05.
 Results:  The results indicated that eight weeks of resistance training led to a significant reduction in plasma levels of Atrogin‑1 and MuRF1, along with a significant increase in Skeletal Muscle Mass (SMM) (p < 0.05). In contrast, eight weeks of aerobic training did not produce significant changes in these markers (p > 0.05). Also, a significant difference was observed between the aerobic exercise group and the resistance exercise group in MuRF-1 and Atrogin-1 indices (P < 0.05), but no significant difference was found between the two groups in skeletal muscle mass index (P > 0.05).
Conclusions:  Based on the findings of the present study, it is recommended that elderly people perform regular exercise, especially resistance training, to maintain the skeletal muscle mass and prevent the muscle atrophy.
