Background and Aim: Diabetes mellitus and mental health can be exerts an effect on patient’s sleep quality. The aim of this study was to determine relationship between quality of sleep with mental health and blood sugar control in elderly with diabetes.
Material & Methods: In this cross-sectional study was carried out on a sample of 200 elderlies with diabetes in Bahonar and Shafa hospitals of Kerman in 2017. The study data was gathered via Kessler-K6 and Yeild questionnaire and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using Chi square, Pearson correlation and binary logistic regression at multivariate model.
Result: Total quality of sleep was poor in elderly patients (6.9±4.5). Most of participants were female (55.4). More than half of the elderly had moderate level of mental distress (54.8%). Most elderly had moderate and poor level in psychological wellbeing (74.6%). Mental health and control sugar have a significant effect on quality of sleep in elderly with diabetes (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Elderly with diabetes have high sleep disorder that can be affected by mental health and their blood sugar control. Health care providers should pay close attention to the sleep quality of this patients, and provide them with appropriate educational intervention. The variables of mental distress, mental well-being and blood glucose control explained 19% of sleep disorders, to identify other factors affecting sleep disorders, it is needed more studies.
