Objectives: The rise in the elderly population is recognized as one of the key economic, social, and healthcare challenges of the 21st century. This study aims to explore the trends, status, and shifts in causes of death among the elderly in the period from 1981 to 2021.
Methods and Materials: This study is applied in nature and employs a secondary analysis method. The data utilized in the research were drawn from the 2021 Global Burden of Disease Study. A rate index was used to compare the causes of death between genders.
Results: Between 1360 and 1400, an average of 5,894,884 deaths were recorded among the elderly population (65 years and older). The mortality rate for the elderly was significantly higher than the national average. Additionally, elderly men accounted for a larger proportion of deaths compared to elderly women. Non-communicable diseases also emerged as the leading contributors to the mortality rate within this age group.
Conclusions: Considering the significant contribution of non-communicable diseases to elderly mortality, it is crucial to focus not only on treatment but also on lifestyle changes and preventive measures. Enhancing the role of social and preventive programs within the country's healthcare system is essential to address this challenge effectively.
