Introduction: Bruxism, defined as the non-functional grinding and clenching of teeth, can have detrimental effects on the oral system, leading to a decline in the sleep quality and quality of life. Given the increasing elderly population and the high prevalence of systemic diseases in this group, this study was conducted to investigate the frequency of bruxism and its association with sleep quality and quality of life among elderly patients with systemic disease visiting the Dental Clinic of Ardabil University of Medical Science in 2025.
Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive-analytical study conducted on 64 elderly patients visiting the Dental Clinic of Ardabil University of Medical Science and Hosseini Charity Clinic. Clinical examinations were performed, and data were collected through questionnaires for bruxism, TMD-ID, OHIP-14, PSQI. The data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics, chi-square.
Findings: The findings indicated a prevalence of 20.3% for bruxism, and 46.9% for Temporomandibular Joints Disorders (TMD). None of the participants had normal sleep quality with the majority (57.8%) experiencing moderate sleep problems. However, an overwhelming majority (76.6%) rated their quality of life as high. Statistical analyses revealed that although no significant association was observed between bruxism and sleep quality dimensions, a statistically significant associations was found between bruxism and lower quality of life (P=0.004). Furthermore quality of life was associated with gender (P=0.046). While the variables of bruxism, sleep quality and quality of life did not show a significant associations with different age groups.
Conclusion: In the studied population, bruxism was independent predictor of lower quality of life, although it was not directly associated with sleep quality. This finding underscores the necessity of screening and managing bruxism in comprehensive geriatric care. Additionally, the co-existence of reported sleep problems and positive perception of quality of life suggests a need to re-examine the factors influencing mental well-being in elderly individuals with chronic diseases.
