Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of life review therapy on depression reduction of elder women of Yazd.

Methods & Materials: Method of the research was semi-experimental design by pre-post test with a control group. Research population consisted of the elder women who were nursing home residents in Yazd. The Fateme_Alzahra nursing home of Taft was randomly selected from all the 3 nursing homes in Yazd province. Depressive symptoms were assessed by Geriatreric Depression Scale (GDS-15) before and after the intervention. The sample of 16 people who scored 8 or more in GDS-15, were randomly assigned into two groups of control (8 people) and experiment (8 people). six sessions of group therapy performed on the experimental group during 6 weeks based on the research format.

Results: Analysis of covariance showed level of depression among the subjects of experimental group significantly decreased.

Conclusion: Findings indicate that life review therapy is effective in reducing depressive symptoms of elder women. In comparison with traditional therapies, the life review therapy is more effective and is recommend for elders.

Abstract

Objectives: Chronic pain is a common problem in the elderly. The prevalence of pain indicates that among the Iranian older population who are living in nursing homes, at any specific time, at least 72.8% experience pain. Research designed as a structured review of one’s life is helpful, even is therapeutic in elderly. The aim of life review therapy increases life satisfaction, improves self-esteem, and helps elderly to cope with crises, losses, life transitions and providing acceptance of their life`s realities in coping and resolving their own past conflicts.

Methods & Materials: Via this descriptive, case-control research, forty residents with persistent pain of 4 nursing homes in Tehran were selected. All subjects were asked to give their own demographic details and pain status following the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Randomly they got allocated into two groups. First group, conducting the complete life review therapy guide and the second one as control group. During the therapy time, patients reconstruct their life story and examine both positive and negative experiences, with the therapist as a coach. Effects of life review therapy on such elderly were examined via pain questionnaire after therapy periods and were compared with basic levels.

Results: The results showed a significant difference between two groups.Reduction in pain questionnaire scores in first group compare with control group were significant.

Conclusion: The implications of these results are discussed with respect to the utility of applying life review therapy for elderly with chronic pain

Abstract

Objectives Old age is a sensitive period of human life. So with increasing elderly population, attention needs to be given to issues related to old age, especially among the institutionalized elderly. So, the aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of life review group therapy on psychological well-being and life expectancy of elderly women living in Ardabil.
Methods & Materials The present study adopted a semi-experimental design, with pretest and posttest and control group. The study population comprised all the elderly women residents in the sanatoriums of the nursing homes present in Ardabil in 2016. Thirty participants were randomly selected and divided into two groups, namely control group and experimental group of 15 participants each. The Ryff Psychological Well-being Questionnaire and Snyder Life Expectancy Scale were used to collect the required data. After implementing the pretest, the experimental group received life review group therapy for 1.5 hours in 6 sessions, once a week. After the training, posttest was repeated for two groups, and data was analyzed using covariance analysis.
Results The findings of the study showed that there were significant differences between experimental and control groups with respect to autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance (P<0.01). Furthermore, a significant improvement was noted in the life expectancy of elderly women in the experimental groups (P<0.05).
Conclusion Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that life review group therapy could significantly enhance the psychological well-being and life expectancy in elderly women. With the rapid increase in the number of elderly, life review group therapy is highly recommended.

Abstract

Objectives Older people experience physical and psychological changes that can negatively affect their life satisfaction and result in unhappiness. Life review therapy can be an effective intervention in increasing the positive feelings and happiness of the elderly. This study aims to determine the effects of a life review therapy program on self-actualization and happiness among older adults. 
Methods & Materials This is a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test/post-test/follow-up design. Participants were 22 elderly people aged ≥60 years referred to a daycare center in Tehran, Iran. They were randomly divided into two intervention (n=11) and control (n=11) groups. The perma flourishing scale and the Oxford happiness questionnaire were used to collect data before, immediately after, and one month after the intervention. The life review therapy was performed according to Haight and Webester’s protocol. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS software, version 26. 
Results There was a significant increase in the total mean scores of happiness and flourishing scores in the intervention group immediately and one month after the intervention (P<0.001), but no significant change was reported in the control group. The mean scores of happiness and flourishing in the intervention group in the pre-test phase were 50.27 and 98.63, respectively. In the post-test and follow-up phases, these scores reached 58.27 and 57.09 for happiness and 111.63 and 104.81 for flourishing, respectively. 
Conclusion The present study shows that life review intervention in can provide an opportunity for flourishing and psychological development and also an increase in the level of happiness among older adults.
