Abstract:
Objective: Elderly changes can have profound effects on the lives and mental health of the elderly, For example, some of the effective factors associated with the psychological health of the elderly can be attributed to optimism and adolescence of aging, which can have significant effects on the elderly. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of prediction of optimism on the basis of perceived aging among elderly people.
Materials and Methods: In This correlational study, the population consisted of elderly people living in Qom in 1396-1397. The subjects included 270 elderly people. The mean age of participants was 74 years and the standard deviation was 6.05 years. In terms of gender, 65% (177 people) were male and 34% (93 people) were female. Participants from Qom were selected through available sampling method. Data were collected using Scheier & Carver optimism (LOT-R) and Aging Perception Questionnaire (APQ). The collected data were analyzed by Kolmogorov Smirnov, cholinertic and regression tests and Spss software version 21 were used to analyze the findings.
Results: The results showed that there is a significant positive correlation between optimism and perception of aging in the elderly (P <0.05). The results of regression analysis showed that optimism can predict the perception of elderly aging significantly (p <0.05). Considering the F score (41.49) and its significant level (Sig = 0.05), the present regression model is a suitable model for explaining the dependent variable of research. Also, according to the modified R2, the present research model is capable of explaining %56 of the perception of aging.
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that optimism can to predict the perception of aging among the elderly, Therefore, it is suggested that mental health professionals and those working in the field of aging, carry out activities to improve the optimism of the elderly, and in future studies, the effect of promoting optimism on perception of aging in an interventional study should be considered.
