Objective: One way to improve the social participation of the elderly is paying attention to environmental adaptation, providing safety, and increasing the independence of the elderly in places they travel. Due to the rapid growth of the elderly population in Iran and also the important role of mosques as one of the main religious-spiritual bases for the elderly, conducting studies to determine the structural components of mosques from the perspective of gerontology and ergonomics are limited. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to explanation of structural suitability components of age-friendly mosques.
Methods & Material: The present study has been done with a qualitative approach and using the content analysis method in 2020. The study population consisted of the elderly who came to the mosques of Babol city who had the ability to communicate effectively and were interested in participate in the research. The selection of mosques as a research environment was based on the geographical distribution (in four regions of north, south, east, and west of Babol). The data collection method was in-depth and semi-structured interviews, and continued until the information saturation was reached. Each interview was transcribed immediately after the interview and then analyzed according to Kvale's step by step method.
Results: In this study was interviewed with 18 elderly people aged 61 to 72 years (66.33±2.99) that 13 of them (72.22%) were female. The data of this study were divided into five main categories and eighteen subcategories, which demonstrate the structural suitability components of age-friendly mosques. Extracted main categories were included outdoor environment, indoor environment, equipment, having basic welfare amenities and internal facilities.
Conclusions: The findings of this study showed the perception of elderly about barriers and structural problems of the elderly in using the mosque environment. The recognized components in this study can help identify, prioritize needs and select the type of interventions in the mosque environment appropriate to the characteristics of the elderly.
