Objectives: It is necessary to better understand the factors related to aging perception in older adults because of its important role in their quality of life and health and due to the increase in their number. It seems that personality traits are one of the factors influencing aging perception. Hence, this research aimed to study the prediction of aging perception based on personality traits in older adults.
Methods & Materials: Multistage sampling was used in this cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study to select 215 of the older adults visiting health centers in Mashhad based on the inclusion-exclusion criteria. After obtaining written consent from the participants, Barker's Brief Aging Perceptions Questionnaire (B-APQ) and the short form of Goldberg's questionnaire for measuring the Big Five personality traits were used for data collection. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and regression in SPSS 16.
Results: The research population consisted of 144 (67.6%) male and 69 (32.4%) female participants. Their mean age was 68.4±7.03 years. The results of the regression analysis indicated that responsibility (P=0.02), extroversion (P=0.008), and neurosis (P<0.001) could predict aging perception in the participants. The coefficient of determination suggested that the research model was able to explain 22% of the variance in aging perception.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this research, it is suggested that health policy makers and specialists in mental health consider offering focused educational programs to strengthen the personality traits of responsibility and extroversion and to decrease the personality trait of neuroticism thereby increasing the level of aging perception in older adults.
