Objectives Social well-being is an important component of healthy aging. The present study aimed to provide a structural modeling of the relationship of social well-being with life experiences and intimacy attitudes in Iranian older adults mediated by positive feelings towards spouse.
Methods & Materials This is a descriptive-correlational study. The study population included all older adults referred to elderly day care or round-the-clock care centers in Tehran, Iran, in 2022. Of this population, 298 eligible people were selected from 27 centers by a convenience sampling method. They completed the Intimacy Attitude Scale of Amidon et al. (1983), the Social Well-Being Questionnaire of Keyes (2004), Life Experience Survey of Sarason et al. (1978), and Positive Feelings Questionnaire of O’Leary et al. (1975). Data were analyzed using path analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) in Amos software.
Results The direct effect of life experiences (path coefficient=-0.23) and intimacy attitudes (path coefficient=0.54) on social well-being was significant (P<0.05). Also, positive feelings towards spouse (path coefficient=0.25) had a significant mediating role in the relationship of life experiences and intimacy attitudes with social well-being (P<0.05).
Conclusion The results confirmed the mediating role of positive feelings towards spouse in the relationship of social well-being with life experiences and intimacy attitudes in Iranian older adults. These findings can be useful in planning to improve social well-being of older adults in Iran.
