Objectives Psychological disorders with negative effects on the health of the elderly can be the cause of frailty syndrome. The present study aimed to determine the relationship between anxiety, stress, and depression and frailty syndrome in home-dwelling elderly individuals in Ardabil City in 2023.
Methods & Materials In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 505 individuals aged 60 years and older were selected using convenience sampling method. The data collection tools included the demographic information form, the Fried Frailty Index, and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale - 21 Items (DASS-21). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean, standard deviation, and inferential statistics, including analysis of variance, independent t-test, correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS software, version 22. A significance level of <0.05 was considered.
Results The average age of the participants was 73.46±6.38 years. Also, 52% were men, 63.3% were married, and 61.9% were illiterate. The results showed that 44.16% of the elderly were frail, 38.82% were at risk of frailty, and 17.02% were not frail. There was a significant relationship between gender, education, marital status, age, employment status, frequency of emergency department visits, frequency of hospitalization, and economic status and frailty (P<0.05). There was a positive and significant correlation between frailty syndrome and depression, anxiety, and stress (P<0.05).
Conclusion By timely identifying vulnerable elderly and providing appropriate intervention based on risk factors, such as depression, anxiety, and stress, the consequences of frailty syndrome can be reduced. Also, by timely screening and effective intervention, mental health problems in the elderly can be prevented.
