Objectives: Psychological disorders with negative effects on the health of the elderly can be the cause of frailty syndrome. The present study was conducted with the aim of determining the relationship between anxiety, stress and depression with frailty syndrome in elderly people living in homes in Ardabil city, 2023.
Methods & Materials: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 505 people aged 60 years and older were selected using convenience sampling method. The data collection tool included the demographic information form, Freud's vulnerability measure, and the 21-question DASS anxiety, stress, and depression questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including mean, standard deviation and inferential analysis including analysis of variance, independent t-test, correlation test and multiple regression using SPSS 22 statistical software. A significance level of <0.05 was considered.
Results: The average age of the participants was 73.46 ± 6.38 years. 52% were men, 63.3% were married and 61.9% were illiterate. 44.2% of the elderly were vulnerable and 38.8% were exposed to vulnerability. There was a significant relationship between gender, education, marriage, age, employment status, frequency of visits to the emergency room, frequency of hospitalization, and economic status with vulnerability (P<0.05). There was a positive and significant correlation between the vulnerability syndrome and depression, anxiety, and stress (P<0.05).
Conclusions: The consequences of frailty syndrome can be reduced by timely identification of frail elderly and appropriate intervention based on risk factors such as depression, anxiety and stress. It also prevented the mental problems of the elderly with timely screening and effective intervention.
