Objectives: Family caregiving for the elderly is a stressful and challenging process that may lead to psychological problems for caregivers. The aim of this study is to identify the psychological needs and problems of family caregivers of elderly people.
Method & Materials: The present study is a review of the thematic synthesis type and was conducted based on the PRISMA checklist. This study reviewed qualitative articles in Persian and English up to August 2024. Relevant articles were identified from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Magiran, Scientific Information Database (SID), and Noor Specialized Journal. Ultimately, 16 studies (13 in English and 3 in Persian) were selected for the final review. This study was registered in PROSPERO with the code CRD42024565977.
Results: Two main categories of psychological problems and psychological needs emerged. Psychological problems consisted of six subcategories: abandonment of personal needs and weakening of personal identity, interference of caregiving role with managing life and recreational activities, being overwhelmed by negative and unpleasant emotions, the heavy burden of caregiving and disruption of other life roles, lack of intimate relationships, decreased well-being and health, and disturbed sleep. The psychological needs consisted of four subcategories: The need for support and a source of reliance, addressing mental health, empathy and to be visible, and temporary relief from caregiving.
Conclusion: The results of the study contribute to a deeper understanding of the psychological problems and needs of caregivers of the older adults and emphasize the necessity of paying more attention to promoting their mental health. These findings can serve as a foundation for developing more comprehensive supportive policies and programs for this group.
