Objectives: The population of older people in the world is increasing which can along with a number of consequences. Loneliness, which defined as reduced relationships with others and isolation, is one of the most common problems in aging and can affect dignity of older people. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the correlation between loneliness and dignity of older people in Tehran.
Materials & Methods: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 390 convenient older people aged 60 and above who visited public parks in Tehran, in 2024. A demographic questionnaire, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the Patient Dignity Inventory were used for data collection and accounted scores for both scales were considered at the same direction. The validity of the questionnaires was evaluated through content and face validities, and reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. The data were analyzed with SPSS 25.
Results: The mean age of the participants was 68.06 (±6.19) years, and 55.4% of them were female. The results indicated that most of participants experienced moderate levels of loneliness (97%) and dignity (90%). The regression analysis showed that loneliness can explain changes in dignity (B=0.417, p=0.024 ) and symptom distress(B=0.171, p=0.009). However, there were not correlation between loneliness and other dimensions of dignity(p>0.05).
Conclusion: The results revealed that as the loneliness increases among older people, the dignity in particular the dimension of tension declines. Therefore, tailored strategies by policy makers and care providers to reduce loneliness can along with preserving and improving the dignity of older people, especially concerning the symptom distress of dignity.
