Objectives: demoralization syndrome leads to an inability to cope effectively with stressful events. Elderly people experience existential crisis such as loss of meaning in life, fear of death and regret of missed opportunities. To put meaning back into their lives, elderly people face difficulties and if they don’t succeed in adding meaning to their lives they may feel incompetent. Considering the significant effect of environment on one’s mental health, this study aims to investigate the relationship between demoralization syndrome and accommodation type in the elderly.
Method: The present research is a descriptive comparison study325 elderly people in Tehran were chosen using non-probability sampling (110 nursing home residents, 100 care receivers at day care centers and 115 home residents). The demoralization scale (Kissane, 2004) was completed by researchers through face to face interviews.
Findings The mean and standard deviation demoralization syndrome in elderly people who are residents of nursing home(69.60±17.41) is higher than home residents(45.40±21.47). And demoralization in the both mentioned groups is higher than the elderly living in their home and receive rehabilitation services in a day care center(31.90±17.59). The observed differences in demoralization syndrome among three groups and its subscales scores were statistically significant (p ≤0.05).
Conclusions:The results showed that Demoralization is related to accommodation type and one’s life style in the elderly. Thus, establishing more elderly day care centers and providing better health insurance coverage for senior citizens would be very helpful to enhance the mental health of them.
