Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the barriers and strategies for job skill training of older workers in Iran.
Materials and Methods: The study was qualitative and used a conventional content analysis approach. The participants included two groups of retirees and employers who were selected through purposive sampling. After obtaining their informed consent, semi-structured interviews were conducted. The interviews continued until theoretical saturation was reached, and the final sample included 31 people.
Results: The findings were classified into 21 sub-subcategories, 7 subcategories, and 2 main categories. The barriers to job skill training for retirees included personal barriers (changes in learning ability with age, financial constraints, scientific constraints, time constraints) and cultural barriers (age stereotypes, lack of social motivation), and its strategies included educational support (strengthening the culture of learning after retirement, strengthening the information network, financial support, improving access), efficient educational models (practical training and internships, short and flexible training time, peer education), appropriate educational content (literacy and language skills, technology skills, self-employment skills, self-care skills), appropriate educational location (technical and vocational training centers, senior centers), and required human resources (health specialists, job coaches).
Conclusion: Retirees face personal and cultural barriers on the path to job skill training. Strategies such as educational support, efficient educational models, appropriate educational content, appropriate educational location, and specialized human resources are necessary to overcome the barriers. These measures can provide the basis for the empowerment and active participation of retirees in job activities.
