Objectives: Iron deficiency anemia in the elderly population is mostly neglected and can play an important role in the occurrence of frailty syndrome. This study aimed to explore the relationship between anemia and frailty syndrome in a large sample of Iranian elderly population.
Methods & Materials: In this study, 3000 people over 60 years of age from the BEH program of a cohort study were investigated by multi-stage random sampling method in Bushehr. Hemoglobin levels below 12 and 13 grams per deciliter were considered as anemia for women and men, respectively. Vulnerability syndrome was measured in this study by the frailty index (unintentional weight loss, walking speed, grip strength, excessive fatigue or lack of energy, physical activity status). Data analysis was performed using STATA version 17 And in all cases P<0.05 was considered significant.
Results: Participants in this study consisted of 50.51% women and the rest were men. The prevalence of vulnerability syndrome was reported as 18.53%, with 58.2% considered pre-frail. The prevalence of anemia in vulnerable elderly was 13.92%, while in non-vulnerable elderly it was 8.11%. Multiple logistic regression results indicated a significant association between vulnerability syndrome and anemia, depression, age, walking time, and grip strength (P<0.005).
Conclusion: Given the unfavorable prevalence of anemia and frailty syndrome in the elderly, and the significant association between anemia and frailty syndrome, it is essential to plan for prevention and effective interventions in this regard.
