Background and Objectives: Intergenerational physical activity holds significant potential for reducing social isolation and enhancing the quality of life among older adults. However, a comprehensive management model that explains these activities within the context of Iranian culture is lacking. This study aimed to develop a model for older adults' sports management with a focus on intergenerational physical activity within the Iranian cultural context.
Methods and Materials: This applied qualitative study employed a grounded theory approach. Using purposive and theoretical sampling, 30 professors, specialists, and managers in physical education, health, and sports sociology from diverse cultural-geographical regions across Iran participated in in-depth, open, and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed concurrently with collection using the Strauss and Corbin method and MAXQDA 2020 software. The criterion of theoretical saturation determined the cessation of interviews.
Results: Data analysis resulted in the extraction of 784 initial codes, 370 secondary codes, and 133 core codes, which were organized into 20 major categories and ultimately formed a paradigmatic model. The core category was identified as “Institutionalizing intergenerational physical activity among older adults”. The extracted model was explained through five main components: 1. Causal conditions (individual, family, structural, and cultural barriers); 2. Contextual conditions (physical-environmental setting, socio-cultural fabric); 3. Intervening conditions (economic factors, family dynamics, gender barriers, intergenerational gap, and the role of technology); 4. Action strategies (social institutionalization, utilizing cultural assets, and structural empowerment); and 5. Consequences (multidimensional improvement of quality of life: physical, psychological, and social-intergenerational aspects).
Conclusions: The developed model reveals that promoting intergenerational physical activity in Iran is a multi-level process requiring the synergy of cultural policies, structural empowerment, and family participation. This theoretical framework can serve as a scientific foundation for national policymaking and the design of effective interventions in the field of elderly sports.
